CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Skiing Trends 01-22-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute
The Website SkiResorts.com cites the following trends for 2010. Many of them aren't just momentary but here to stay, especially when they pertain to sustainable environmental trends and safety on the slopes. Here's a rundown of their predictions:
• Helmets should become a requirement on slopes - It goes without saying that we all "ski at our own risk", but with resorts becoming more and more socially conscious it seems obvious that we'll start to cruise by slope-side signs that read "Wear Your Helmet - It's The Law."
• 80's bright fashion makes a comeback - This season's style is seeing a resurgence of 80's vibe -- minus shoulder pads and big hair -- with retro bright and neon colors worn by trend-setting skiers from Vermont to Vancouver. Beginners are safer on the slopes dressed in lime green and experts can't be missed.
• Wind is the energy of choice - More skiers are seeking fully sustainable and environmentally-friendly ski resorts. Creating clean energy isn't just a trend but a mainstay among a growing number of ski resorts. Many, such as Jiminy Peak in Vermont and Kirkwood in California, use windmills to generate power.
• Monoskis are gaining traction - Monoskiers won't have to keep a low profile at far-off resorts as steam has been building to renew the sport over the past 5 or 6 years. It's about time the monoski hit the tipping point.
• It's cool for kids to ski again - Shawn White led a generation of snow boarders down the slopes during the past decade but kids are coming around again to the idea that two skis are just as fun as one. Facing downhill might not be a bad thing anymore. Skiers can ride rails and hit the half pipe without feeling like an un-welcome guest.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
