CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 01-25-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate increased for December, but apparently was adjusted for November, so it remained at 12.4 percent but up from the original 12.3 pronouncement according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department.
The number of people illustrated unemployed in the state is estimated to be 2,254,000 the preliminary number used in November, so there is no validation until the December revise other than the fact there are plenty of Californians unemployed. To put it in perspective, there are more Californians unemployed then there are populations in 15 different states and the individual labor forces of an estimated 25 states.
For California, three categories added jobs over the month including Information, Financial Activities, Education and Health Services. Meanwhile eight categories reported declines including mining and logging; construction; manufacturing; trade; transportation and utilities; professional and business services, leisure and hospitality; and government.
Meanwhile, for December, 50 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment, down from 51 in November. In addition eight counties comprised of Inyo, Marin, Napa, Orange, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 10.0 percent, similar to last month’s count.
Marin County has the lowest unemployment rate, 7.8 percent 0.2 percent lower from its November’s 8 percent rate, while Imperial County continues to have the highest unemployment rate at 27.7 from last month’s 29.2 percent, but it is joined by two other counties that have in excess of 20 percent unemployment; Colusa which is second highest with 25.9 percent up from 22.6 percent in November and Sutter at 20 percent. There are nineteen counties that have 15 percent or higher unemployment rates, Colusa, Calaveras, Fresno, Glenn, Kings, Lake, Madera, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Stanislaus, Sutter, Trinity, Tulare, and Yuba.
