CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE World Ag Expo 02-09-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute
The World Ag Expo opens today and is expected to have more than 100,000 in attendance at the 43rd annual event in Tulare.
The Expo is the largest annual agricultural show of its kind with 1,500 exhibitors displaying cutting-edge agricultural technology and equipment on 2.5 million square feet of show grounds. Started in 1968, the Expo is always held the second week in February, hosting companies from nearly 70 nations. However, this year, the recession has impacted the Expo specifically in the reduction of exhibitors by about 7 percent from 2009.
Nonetheless, the Expo illustrates the size and magnitude of agriculture, a sector often over looked, specifically in California as a significant contributor to the state’s economy. Attendees have the chance to attend presentations on a variety of topics important to dairy producers, farmers, ranchers and agribusiness professionals.
New changes to the Expo this year include using some new Web 2.0 tools such as real time video from the Expo, so web-surfers can view the Expo from cameras strategically positioned at the grounds along with a digitized map of the Expo, illustrating locations of exhibitors so patrons can locate the exhibits of interest prior to arrival to reduce time in locating them.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
