CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Skiing California 01-03-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Skiing and snowboarding is big business in California. The state's ski resorts recorded 8.1 million visitors last season, up from about 6.8 million in 2008-09. It was a great season as ski resorts saw nearly a 20 percent increase year-over-year. Visitors to the state's ski resorts last year spent at least $700 million, resulting in about $3 billion in total economic activity, according to the state's ski industry association.
This year with early snow fall, the season has seen a strong start. All of the major resorts in the Lake Tahoe area were open for Thanksgiving along with several in Southern California.
While the recession may have been the culprit in holding the industry in check, it appears that the recession is loosening its hold as skiers appear to be returning to the slopes.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
