CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Construction 04-07-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute
California lost nearly 114,000 jobs in 2009 according to a review released this week by the American General Contractors of America, AGC.
The review examines federal data of 337 metropolitan areas and found that only 10 areas saw an increase.
The following illustrates some of the communities and the number of construction jobs lost:
Los Angeles-Long Beach shed 23,000 jobs Santa Ana-Anaheim lost 14,400 jobs Riverside-San Bernardino lost 13,000 jobs Sacramento lost 9,300 jobs San Diego- Carlsbad -San Marcos lost 7,700 jobs San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara lost 7,500 jobs Oakland-Fremont-Hayward lost 6,500 jobs San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood city lost 5,800 Bakersfield lost 3,000 jobs Fresno lost 2,500 jobs Santa Rosa-Petaluma 2,100 jobs Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta 1,300 jobs Stockton lost 1,300 jobs San Luis Obispo Paso Robles lost 1,300 Visalia-Porterville 1,100 jobs Santa Cruz-Watsonville 1,000 jobs Chico lost 400 jobs Redding lost 300 jobs
Of interest, Hanford and Corcoran and Yuba City metro areas remained stable.
The numbers are rounded and derived from data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The AGC report says 230 metro areas experienced double digit declines in construction employment while only two cities experienced a double digit increase. The unemployment rate nationally for the industry is 24.9 percent as of March. And while the unemployment in the construction sector grew by 15,000 jobs nationally, California lost 21,500 construction jobs in February, according to the state Employment Development Department.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
