Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The state’s unemployment rate increased 0.1 percent to 12.6 percent for March according to the Employment Development Department.
The number of unemployed Californians was 2,308,000 – up by 31, 000 over the month and up by 362,000 from Mach 2009.
Five categories (mining and logging; manufacturing; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; education and healthcare and other services added jobs over the month. Five categories (construction; information; financial activities; professional and business services; and government) reported job declines this month. One sector, trade, transportation and utilities, recorded no change.
There were still eight counties that had over 20 percent unemployment rates that include Imperial 27.0%; Colusa 26%; Plumas 23%; San Benito 22.8%; Sutter 22.5%; Trinity 21.7%; Merced 22.1% and Yuba 20.5%.
Only two counties now have lower or equal unemployment rates to the national rate –Mono 8.1%; increased by.3% and Marin 8.8% increased by .4; San Mateo 9.4% and Orange 9.7% in February both jumped by .4 percent to 9.8 and 10.1 percent.
