CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE International Trade 05-19-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s exports continued to increase in March for the fifth consecutive month, according to the figures from the US Dept. of Commerce.
Exports from California for March rose $8.27 billion up from February to a total of $22.1 billion since the first of the year.
The Golden State accounted for exporting 10 percent of the nation’s manufactured commodities second only to Texas at 16.3 percent. Export shipments of non durable agricultural goods and other non-manufactured products expanded by $1.43 billion for the month. And shipments of re-exports comprised 11.3 of the nation’s total, only behind that of Louisiana’s 13.2 percent.
As for imports, California’s import trade increase for manufactured goods by $21.8 billion to $61.3 billion, accounting for 18.5 percent of total imports in the nation for the month. As it pertains to agricultural goods and non-manufactured products, imports increased by $3.1 billion to a $9.1 billion comprising 9.7 percent of imports in the nationally behind Texas at 26.1 and Louisiana at 10.3 percents. However, the combined totals of both categories places California at 16.5 percent of all imports come through California in the nation, ahead of Texas at 14.8 percent for the month of March.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
