CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 05-21-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The state’s unemployment rate remained the same at 12.6 percent for April according to the Employment Development Department, EDD.
The number of unemployed Californians was 2,300,000 – down by 7,000 to 8,000 over the month but up by 290,000 for April 2009. However, by their own admittance, EDD illustrates that 355,000 jobs have been lost since April of 2009.
NOTE TO READERS: In the March release it illustrates that based upon the federal survey of households, there was an increase of 4,200 non-farm jobs over the month, Feb. to March 2010 yielding 32,400 jobs created since the first of the year. However, the April release illustrates that there was an increase of 14,200 non-farm jobs. Thus, since the first of the year, that would equal 46,600 jobs. However, the April release claims there has been a creation of 56,400 non-farm jobs since the first of the year. This is the difference of 9800 jobs. Is it an error in the March release or did the jobs increase by 24,000? No explanation for this difference.
Five categories (mining and logging; manufacturing; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; education and healthcare and other services added jobs over the month. Five categories (construction; information; financial activities; professional and business services; and government) reported job declines this month. One sector, trade, transportation and utilities, recorded no change.
For April Imperial County has the highest unemployment at 27.9 percent and Mono County has the lowest at 8.2 percent.
This month only five counties had over 20 percent unemployment rates (down from eight in March), they include Imperial 27.9% up from 27%; Colusa 20.7% down from 26%; Plumas 20.2% down from 23%; Sutter 21.3% down from 22.5%; Trinity 20.4% down from 21.7%.
Multiple counties now have lower or equal unemployment rates to the national rate –Inyo, Marin, Mono, Orange, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Barbara,
