Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Nationally, imports and exports fell for the month of April and were reflective in California according to the figures from the US Dept. of Commerce.
Exports from California were $11.2 billion for April, down from March’s $12.2 billion. The state’s exports total $44.2 billion since the first of the year, second only to Texas.
The Golden State accounted for exporting 10 percent of the nation’s manufactured commodities at $7.3 billion, again, second only to Texas at 16.5 percent. And export shipments of non durable agricultural goods and other non-manufactured products decreased for the month from last month’s $1.43 billion to $1.35 billion for the month of April. However, the Golden State remained the largest exporting state in this category at 12.2 percent.
While the nation’s import trade fell for April, California’s import trade grew over the month, increasing by $25.9 billion, for a total of $96.4 billion for the year, comprising 16.5 percent of imports.
Increases were seen in imports of manufactured goods by $22.5 billion to $83.9 billion, accounting for 18.7 percent in this category for the month. As it pertains to agricultural goods and non-manufactured products; imports increased by $3.3 billion to a total $12.4 billion comprising 9.7 percent of imports in this category in the nation for the year behind Texas at 26.6 and Louisiana at 10.8 percents.
California remains a very close second to Texas in combined import/exports totaling over $144 billion since the first of the year.
