Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The state’s unemployment rate decreased slightly to 12.4 percent from a revised 12.5 percent for April according to the Employment Development Department, EDD. Non-farm jobs increased by 28,000 over the month but year-over-year show a decrease of 244,700.
Six categories (manufacturing; information; professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government) added jobs over the month, gaining 46,200 jobs. Government posted the largest increase over the month, adding 30,000 jobs, all in federal government, (Census Bureau). Four categories (construction; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; and educational and health services) reported job declines this month, down 17,900 jobs. Trade, transportation and utilities posted the largest decline over the month, down by 9,600 jobs.
For May Imperial County had the highest unemployment at 27.5 percent and Marin County has the lowest at 7.9 percent.
This month only two counties had over 20 percent unemployment rates (down from five in April), they include Imperial 27.5% and Sutter 20%.
Multiple counties now have lower or equal unemployment rates to the national rate – Inyo, Marin, Mono, Napa, Orange, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Barbara,
