CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 04-19-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
If there was any hope for an improving employment outlook, it did not occur at least according to the recent report for March from the Employment Development Department, (EDD).
EDD’s report on payroll employment (wage and salary jobs) in the nonfarm industries of California totaled 14,049,300 in March, a net loss of 11,600 jobs since the February survey. This followed a gain of 84,600 jobs (as revised) in February.
Four categories: (information; professional and business services; educational and health services; and government) added jobs over the month. Seven categories: (mining and logging; construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; leisure and hospitality; and other services) reported job declines.
The recent EDD figures illustrate that 55 out of the 58 counties in the state are in excess of the national unemployment level of 8.8 percent for March 2011 based upon seasonally adjusted figures. In February, 54 counties were in excess of the national level.
Marin County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 8 percent up from 7.8 in February. It was followed by Mono with 8.2 percent and San Mateo with 8.4 percent. On the flip side, Colusa County continues to have the highest unemployment in the state with 26.7 percent unemployment. However it is down from 27.1 last month and 27.5 in January. Imperial follows next with 24.6 percent. It is followed by Sutter at 22.9 percent, Merced 21.4 percent, Trinity at 20.9 percent, San Benito 20.6 percent and Siskiyou at 20.2 percent.
Plumas County which was above 20 percent last month dropped to 19.9 and is joined by others near the 20 percent level with Yuba and Lake Counties both at 19.5 percent.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
