CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 08-20-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute
The state’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 12.3 percent in July according to the Employment Development Department, EDD. However, July 2010 unemployment was up 0.5 percent over 11.8 percent unemployment for June 2009, illustrating that employment still lags.
Five categories (construction; trade, transportation and utilities; information; educational and health services; and other services) added jobs over the month, gaining 21,000 jobs. Educational and health services posted the largest increase over the month, adding 11,600 jobs.
Five categories (mining and logging; manufacturing; professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; and government) reported job declines this month, down 30,400 jobs. Government posted the largest decline over the month, down by 23,100 jobs. One sector, financial activities, reported no change over the month.
For July, Imperial County has the highest unemployment at 30.3 percent, up 2.7 percent from 27.6 percent in June and Marin County has the lowest at 8.6 percent however up from 8.2 from June but even higher from 7.9 percent in May. Again, this month only one county had over 20 percent unemployment rates (down from two in May and five in April), and that was Imperial County.
Counties that now have a lower or equal unemployment rate to the national rate of 9.5 percent are Inyo, Marin, Napa, Orange, San Mateo and Santa Barbara. Thirteen counties saw either decreases or were unchanged
However, beyond Imperial County, another 44 counties saw their unemployment increase. Those seeing largest increases: Glenn (15.5 to 16.6); Merced (18.1 to 18.8); Riverside (14.5 to 15.3); Sacramento, (12.6 to 13.1); San Joaquin (16.5 to 17.4); San Luis Obispo (10 to 10.5); Trinity (17.7 to 18.4); Tulare (15.8 to 16.9) and Yuba (18.8 to 19.6).
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
