Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate continues to rise as it grew by two-tenths of one percent in July to 12 percent, the second highest in the nation.
The state’s report on payroll employment (wage and salary jobs) in the nonfarm industries of California totaled 14,074,700 in July, a net gain of 4,500 jobs since the June survey. This followed a gain of 30,400 jobs (revised) in June. The number of people unemployed in California was 2,167,000 – up by 34,000 over the month, but down by 85,000 compared with July of last year.
Eight categories: Mining and logging; construction; manufacturing; information; professional and business services; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and other services added jobs over the month, gaining 12,600 jobs. Educational and health services posted the largest increase over the month. Three categories: Trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; and government reported job declines over the month, with government posting the largest decline over the month.
The lowest unemployment rate in the state was 8.1 percent in Marin County, but it is up from 8.0 percent in June and 7.4 percent in May.
The highest unemployment rate in the state for July was in Imperial County where 30.5 percent of adults were jobless, up from 28.5 percent in June and 27.7 percent in May.
