CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Best for Small Biz 10-14-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Fortune Small Business and the Kauffman Foundation released their list of the top 50 cities to launch a small business. The rankings were based on a variety of factors, including per capita income, hourly wages, workforce quality, crime rates, taxes and foreclosure rate. All the communities had growing economies, affordable workers, stable housing markets and low crime rates required for entrepreneurs
The following lists only the top ten per category. A total of 50 were chosen, 10 in the largest cities and 20 each in medium and small cities.
TOP LARGEST CITIES 1. Oklahoma City 2. Pittsburgh 3. Raleigh 4. Houston 5. Hartford 6. Washington DC 7. Charlotte 8. Austin 9. New York 10. Baltimore
TOP MEDIUM CITIES 1. Huntsville, AL 2. Lafayette, LA 3. Omaha, NE 4. Clarksville TN 5. Peoria, IL 6. Lexington, KY 7. Killeen, TX 8. Des Moines, IA 9. Baton Rouge, LA 10. Lincoln, NE
SMALL CITIES 1. Billings, MT 2. Bismarck, ND 3. Fargo, ND 4. Rapid City, SC 5. Sioux City SD 6. Midland, TX 7. Morgantown WV 8. Dubuque, IA 9. Hattiesburg, MS 10. Missoula, MT
Last year the title of their rankings was Life and Launch a Small Business, so it was a little different twist this year. Last year the city of Marina Del Rey made the top ten on the list. Apparently, this year based upon 2007 data from the US Census Bureau, no California cities made the list for 2009. Additionally, recall an earlier ranking by the BizJournals see 02-19-09 Minute on the Best for Small Business, Raleigh, Charlotte, Austin, and Okalahoma City showed up on their top ten list. However a ranking by US and News & World Report, rating the ‘Seven Best States for Business’, Washington, Virginia, Colorado, Texas, Nevada, Utah and Florida, the states of Washington, Colorado, Nevada did not have one city mentioned on Fortune’s ranking.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
