CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Supporting the Healthcare Sector 10-15-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
In a community effort to support the growth of its healthcare sector, economic developers representing the two adjoining rural northern Californian counties of Yuba and Sutter, recommended the formulation of a first-of-its kind effort comprised of community and business stakeholders, local government officials and healthcare providers and professionals including hospitals, insurers along with local government, educational institutes and workforce training agencies to promote the economic growth of this sector.
Based upon an economic analysis (a location quotient factor) supplemented by a targeted industry review, the region realized that the healthcare sector has been and is forecasted to be one of the largest and fastest growing segments of its economy.
Therefore, after the identification of this information, an effort began in earnest with the formulation of the Yuba Sutter Healthcare Council. Its mission is to promote an effective healthcare system locally. Its efforts are to work with the community to optimize the use of its community’s limited healthcare resources. The Council is currently focused on health IT, health information exchange, community wellness and promoting healthcare careers to local students.
In addition, the Council has adopted a series of principles that they believe should be applied to healthcare, many of which are not in place today. As such, they believe they should be utilized in the ongoing healthcare reform discussion.
The effort appears to be an innovative approach and certainly a ‘Best Practice’ in the world of economic development given the nature of promoting an economic cluster such as healthcare.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
