Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate decreased for November, down .02 percent to 12.3 percent from the October 12.5 percent according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department. The number of people unemployed in the state is estimated to be 2,254,000 down from an estimated 45,000 from October. But not everything is rosy, for nonfarm payroll dropped by 10,200 jobs during the month.
For California, five categories had added jobs over the month including mining and logging; construction; information; professional and business services. Six sector lost jobs, manufacturing; trade; transportation and utilities; financial activities; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and government.
Meanwhile, this month, 51 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment, up from 49 in October. In addition eight counties comprised of Inyo, Marin, Mariposa, Napa, Orange, San Francisco, San Mateo, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 10.0 percent, similar to last month’s count.
Marin County has the lowest unemployment rate, 8.0 percent for November, while Imperial County continues to have the highest unemployment rate at 29.2 percent while; Colusa is second highest with 22.6 percent.
