Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The state’s unemployment rate remained the same in October at 12.4 percent according to the Employment Development Department, EDD.
While EDD identified that there was an increase in 39,000 jobs month over month it is still show a decrease in jobs of over 29,000 jobs from October 2009.
Eight categories (construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; professional and business services; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government) added jobs over the month, gaining 46,500 jobs. Professional and business services posted the largest increase over the month, adding 14,800 jobs. Three categories (mining and logging; information; and financial activities) reported job declines this month, down 7,500 jobs. Financial activities posted the largest decline over the month, down by 4,300 jobs.
Marin County had the lowest unemployment rate at 8 percent, however 8 counties up from 6 in September had lower unemployment rate than the nation. Imperial County had the highest unemployment rate at 29.3 down from 30.4 in September. However, 6 counties had unemployment rates of 17 percent and above.
