Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Unemployment dropped to 11.7 percent in October according to the numbers released by the State’s Employment Development Department.
The number dropped two tenths of one percent from September and eight-tenths from the October 2010 rate of 12.5 percent.
Seven categories (construction; information; financial activities; professional and business services; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and other services) added jobs over the month, gaining 35,500 jobs. Professional and business services posted the largest increase over the month, adding 17,300 jobs.
Four categories (mining and logging; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; and government) reported job declines over the month, down 9,800 jobs. Manufacturing and government posted the largest decreases over the month, each down 3,900 jobs.
Marin County had the lowest unemployment rate at 7.2 percent while Imperial had the highest at 28.9 percent, both down over the month. California counties below the national unemployment rate of 9.0 included Marin, San Mateo 7.9; San Francisco 8.1; Napa 8.3; Orange 8.5; Santa Barbara 8.6. Additionally, San Luis Obispo and Inyo counties are very close at 9.2 and 9.3 percents.
