CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Fontana 01-11-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Fontana city leaders are optimistic about 2008. While concerned about the downturn in housing, officials believe they will be insulated from the most severe repercussions of the housing woes that are impacting the Inland Empire. In fact, the city is actively promoting Fontana as a "city of action" and a "land of opportunity."
Because of an annexation of 12,000 San Bernardino County residents into the city limits in late 2006, Fontana has become the second-largest city in the county with 181,640 residents. It surpassed Ontario (172,701) and Rancho Cucamonga (172,331) and now is second only to San Bernardino (205,010).
Elisa Grey, the economic development director for the city identifies that the economy is doing well, specifically in two key areas -- retail development and capital improvement.
Recent business development includes a Target Distribution Center, Home Shopping Network and Cliffstar (producer of Kirkland Juices) now call Fontana home.
Fontana's lower land prices will continue to attract businesses moving eastward from Los Angeles and Orange counties.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
