CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE California, Snow Shovels not Required 01-14-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Researchers from the University of California from Berkeley and Santa Barbara campuses have found that Californias mild winters are good for ones health and are even nudging up Americans average lifespan.
Comparing death records and climate data between 1972 and 1988, researchers report that Chicago had the highest annual average of cold-related deaths, with 542 deaths per 100,000 elderly people, followed by Minneapolis with 448 and Detroit with 426 - in comparison to only 24 in San Jose and none in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego.
The 14,380 deaths each year linked to extreme cold, accounted for 0.8 percent of the nation's annual death rate, outnumber those attributed to leukemia, murder and chronic liver disease combined the study reports.
The search for warmth is the reason why so much of the retired population living in the north snowbirds come south to California and Arizona every winter.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
