CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Citrus Crop 01-16-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
After a freeze from last year, this years state citrus crop has returned with larger yields.
The all orange forecast in California is at 63.0 million cartons (2.36 million tons), and is 9 percent higher than October's forecast and 40 percent above last season. The navel forecast is 48.0 million boxes (1.80 million tons), 12 percent above the October forecast and 41 percent higher than 2006-07's final utilization. California's Valencia orange forecast is 15.0 million boxes (563,000 tons), unchanged from the previous forecast but 36 percent above last season.
The California lemon forecast is 34 million cartons, 6 percent above last seasons final production and up 3 percent from the October forecast.
California tangerine forecast (including mandarins and tangelos) is 10.2 million cartons. Production is 76 percent above last seasons crop and up 9 percent from the October forecast.
California grapefruit forecast is 10 million cartons, 11 percent above the October forecast and up 25 percent from last seasons crop.
