CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Sports Fishing 01-25-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The non-profit organization Cal Trout released an analysis about the economic impacts of sports fishing in California. The study illustrates that Californias sports anglers spend well over $2 billion a year on fishing-related items and activities.
The study identifies direct fishing trip-related expenditures such as fishing gear, bait, boats, parking fees, license fees, food, lodging, gas, and how all of these elements impact local economies.
The report recommends that the state should give high priority to habitat protection and maintenance, which would increase present and future economic benefits to the state's economy.
The findings of the report illustrate that people all over the state depend on the financial infusion caused by recreational fishing, and that its beneficial effect could be increased even further by better protecting and maintaining the streams and surrounding habitats that make fishing possible. Also, by encouraging young people to get involved in sports fishing, the people of California can maximize the long-term value of this healthy, sustainable activity.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
