CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Impacts from the Super Bowl 02-01-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute. The estimated economic impact from a Super Bowl on the host city or region is estimated to be from $200 to $350 million. Typically, just for the weekend, the host city can capture $40 to 60 million through its hotel/motel tax, sales tax, car rental fees and landing fees at local airports and dont forget the ticket tax.
But many fail to understand that the Super Bowl has now become a week long event that truly becomes a major tax generator for the host communities.
For Glendale, Arizona its efforts go back 20 years ago as part of the Phoenix metropolitan region's examination to find a permanent site for an NFL franchise to play after investors bought the former St. Louis Cardinal franchise. Glendale as a suburb stepped forward; its political leaders, business community and residents built what is now known as the University of Phoenix Stadium in what was once a cotton field west of Phoenix.
While the Phoenix region basks in the limelight this year, California retailers will use the Super Bowl to their advantage selling everything from HD televisions, food and beverages. The consulting firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas has identified that the Super Bowl creates the highest day in the year for job absenteeism.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
