Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.

In less than 30 years, San Diego has become a global center of wireless telecommunications. 
Today there is a core of globally recognized companies including Qualcomm, Nokia, Ericcson
and Motorola coupled with smaller privately owned companies and entrepreneurs growing this
dynamic industry cluster. The San Diego region is home to the following:

• 168: Number of telecom companies in San Diego County in 1990 as the nation's first 
  telecom cluster formed

• 633: Current number of local telecom companies.

• 89: Number of local companies founded by former employees of pioneering telecom 
  company Linkabit

• 25,469: Number of telecom workers in San Diego County

• $112,825: Average annual wage for a local telecom worker

• $11 billion: Estimated economic contribution to the San Diego County economy by the 
   telecom sector in 2004, the most recent year for statistics.
