CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE
From California with Love 02-14-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
In A.D. 496, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Through the centuries, the Christian holiday became a time to exchange love messages, and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.
If you plan to give your Valentine chocolates, there is a high probability they were produced in California. The state leads the nation in the number of such establishments with 128.
And if you plan to give flowers, there is a very high probability that the flowers are from California. The state is the leading producer of flowers, accounting for about three-quarters of the total dollar amount sold in wholesale markets nationally.
And, while California does not have a city with the romantic name of Valentine like both Texas and Nebraska have, it does have a city with a similar theme, the city of Roseville.
California and Valentine's Day go hand in hand, economically speaking.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
