CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Retail Sales 03-14-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The national retail and food sales figures for February were released by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The numbers showed a 0.6 percent decrease over the month but an increase from February 2007.
The total retail sales for February were $380.2 billion.
While sales of apparel, sporting goods and general merchandise all rose, weakness spread across most categories last month, especially big-ticket durable goods.
Furniture sales declined for a seventh straight month to 0.5%, while sales of building materials fell 0.7%. Electronics sales dropped 0.4%, following for three months in a row. Motor vehicle sales fell sharply by 1.9%. Automakers' January-February U.S. sales were the worst two-month selling rate in a decade.
On the flip side, gasoline station sales were up 20.2 percent from February 2007 and sales of sporting goods, hobby, book, and music stores were up 6.3 percent from last year.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
