CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Easter Lilies of California 03-21-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
With Easter coming this year, lily growers have been busy with an accelerated season. Lilies are a highly specialized crop grown by a handful of growers, many which are concentrated in an area near the Smith River in Northern California and others just north near Brookings in Southern Oregon.
Apparently for growers due to the early Easter, it has been chaotic getting the lilies to grow. They way you get product into a flower to sell in the stores for Easter on those varying dates is different temperatures. The earlier in the year, such as this year, the more temperature and more heat that is required. However growers warn that it is not an easy task. Too much heat in the greenhouse and it can impact the plant.
Lily growers are slaves to the calendar. The next time Easter will fall on March 23 will be approximately 220 years from now on 2228. The last time it was March 23 1913.
Next year lily growers will have an extra 19 days to force the crop in greenhouses as Easter will fall on April 12, 2009.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
