CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE CA Rice 05-02-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Californias rice industry produces nearly 2 million tons of rice annually, making it the second largest rice producing state in the nation only behind Arkansas, contributing nearly $500 million in direct impact on the states economy.
California exports rice to markets in Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and through out North America.
California grows 95 percent of it within 100 miles of Sacramento. Rice is the predominant crop in Butte, Colusa, Sutter and Yuba Counties. On the nearly 600,000 acres of land where the rice is grown it also supports wildlife habitat, up to 235 different species. And this acreage is also home to over 12 million water fowl as a part of the Pacific flyway for ducks and geese.
In addition to these attributes, rice straw is being used for building material and rice husks are being used in co-generation or bio fuel plants.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
