CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 05-19-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The state Employment Development Department released employment figures for April. Unemployment remained unchanged at 6.2 percent from the previous month. Californias estimated unemployment rate was 5.1 percent from April 2007.
Construction, manufacturing and financial services posted losses over the year, while leisure and hospitality recorded the largest gains. Based upon seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted numbers, both education and health care posted gains over the month and year. Ten counties had unemployment rates equal to or lower than the U.S. average of 5.0 percent in April. These included; Marin, Mono, Napa, Orange, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara and Sonoma, up from 6 counties in March. However, on the opposite side of the unemployment picture, 13 counties have double digit unemployment, the good news it is down from 23 counties in March. Those that have double digit unemployment include; Colusa, Fresno, Imperial, Kings, Merced, Modoc, Plumas, Sierra, Stanislaus, Sutter, Trinity, Tulare and Yuba. Unfortunately 48 out of the 58 counties in the state have higher unemployment rates than the national average.
Marin had the lowest unemployment rates at 3.9. Imperial County had the highest at 18.4 percent.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
