CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE For Dear Old Dad 06-13-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
This Sunday is Fathers Day. Surprisingly, Fathers day was originated in Spokane, Washington in 1910. It wasnt until 1966 that President Johnson proclaimed its celebration in June but it did not become official until 1972 when then President Nixon signed public law making it permanent. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 64.3 million dads across the nation.
And just in time for Father's Day, a new national survey shows 52 percent of dads prefer an electronics gift for their big day, easily outnumbering dads who want clothing (16 percent), sports gear (13 percent), or a vacation trip (9 percent). Only eight percent of dads said they don't want a Father's Day gift.
According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Americans will spend more than $12.8 billion on in-car electronics in 2008. CEA research also reveals the typical American spends 17 hours per week in his or her vehicle.
Other electronic devices listed by dads portable DVD players, laptop computers, MP3, and an upgraded car stereo, i.e. HD or satellite.
So dont forget, whether he wants a gift or not, take time out from your business to remember dear old dad.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
