CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Uninsured Americans 06-27-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The headlines read 43 million uninsured. Then there's the headline issue: But who are the 43 million uninsured? The answers may surprise you.
--70% of the uninsured are in families with at least one full-time worker
--10% have at least one part-time worker. The rest are retired or unemployed
--8.4 million are eligible for government programs but dont know they are, dont know how to sign up or dont have access to the documents that are required
--10.2 million are noncitizens. About 80% of them are legal residents, but many have low-income jobs and cant afford or dont have access to insurance
--9.2 million have household incomes of $75,000 or higher. Some are healthy and dont want coverage. Others cant get it because of preexisting conditions
--7.5 million are aged 19-24 and either have no access to health care, lack money to pay for it or dont think they need it because they are in good health
Californians make up the largest sum total of people without health insurance at 6.2 million and the sixth largest percentage of a state's population without insurance at 15 percent behind Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Louisianna and New Mexico.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
