CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Disaster Preparedness 06-05-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
A new national survey reveals that a startling number of small businesses remain unprepared to face a potential disaster, be it a hurricane, tornado, wildfire or computer virus, and the majority of these businesses have no plans to change.
Commissioned by the retailer Office Depot, the survey of small businesses shows 40 percent admit they are not ready for a disaster and one-third indicate having no current plans to get prepared.
Of those businesses indicating they were not prepared for a natural disaster: 37 percent said they had not taken the time to do so; 17 percent indicated it was too expensive; and 11 percent claim not to know what to do.
A few tips in preparation of a disaster include, make sure the police have a point of contact for your business; you have a company phone tree; have emergency grab kits for employees; keep back up documents of the company, even think about placing them offsite; keep a separate emergency fund, comprised of cash or travelers checks.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
