CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE TECH RANKINGS 06-05-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
According to a new study by the California-based Milken Institute, the Silicon Valley, comprised of San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara continues to lead all metropolitan regions in the US and Canada in terms of the economic activity that it creates through its technology industry.
The study ranked 393 high-tech regions in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, based on data such as employment and wages in 19 specific tech industries.
Beyond the Silicon Valley, California controls the top ten with Los Angeles-Long Beach and Glendale area ranked 5th, San Diego, Carlsbad and San Marcos region ranked 7th, Santa Ana, Anaheim and Irvine ranked 8th and the area encompassing San Francisco, San Mateo and Redwood City also ranked 10th. Oakland, Fremont and Hayward came in 15th.
Ross DeVol, the report's principal author, said that cities with the strongest high-tech bases will perform best as the economy recovers, since the jobs generated by those fields pay so well. "Every sector has been impacted by the current economic downturn, but high-tech centers will come out on top," said DeVol.
