CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE WiFi Riverside 07-19-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The city of Riverside this month activated the first phase of what will eventually be a free citywide Wi-Fi network. The service is a combine effort of city government and their providers, AT&T and the Mt. View based company, MetroFi. Phase one covers downtown and the Hunter?s Technology Park and Adams Auto Center. Phase II will encompass 55 square miles, nearly the entire center. Although access to the network is free, users have to put up with web-based banner advertisements and pop-ups as they log using the system. The ads are a trade-off for free high-speed access to the Internet. A key feature of the network is that it has two spectrums, a 2.4 gigahertz frequency for the general public and 4.9 gigahertz frequency for police and fire that is secure and encrypted to protect from hacking.
Full deployment of the system is to be completed by March 2008. I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
