CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Buy Local 09-22-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Many cities across the state have had Buy Local campaigns in the effort to illustrate the retail opportunities in their communities and to enhance both economic growth and tax base. But given the current economic conditions, now other cities are beginning to embrace the concept.
For example, San Jose city officials at a Community and Economic Development Committee meeting last month introduced a 'Buy San Jose' campaign.
Tax dollars generated from sales are spent on roads, parks, libraries, police, firefighters and many other public services. Nearly one out of every $5 collected in San Jose's $913 million General Fund for 2008-09 came from sales taxes.
The concept of a buy local campaign is to bring attention to residents as consumers the retail opportunities in their own community and the value of buying local.
Should the San Jose City Council approve the concept, the campaign could be launched after the first of the year.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
