CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 07-19-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate remained stable at 11.6 percent for June according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department.
While California has a high unemployment rate, it’s ranking has dropped, it now ranks 6th in the nation for unemployment behind #1 Michigan (15.2%); #2 Oregon (12.2%); #3 Rhode Island (12.4%); #4 South Carolina (12.1%); #5 Nevada (12.0%); #7 Ohio (11.1%); #8 North Carolina (11.0%); Tied for 9th Washington DC & Kentucky at (10.9) #10 Tennessee at (10.8%). Sixteen states have double digit unemployment.
For California, not one employment sector saw an increase. The largest decrease was seen in Professional and Business services by nearly 14,000.
In addition, 50 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment up from last month’s 49. And only 6 counties, Marin, Napa, Orange, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 9.5 percent
Marin County which has the lowest unemployment rate, increased from 7.5 to 8 percent and Imperial County continues to have the highest unemployment rate increasing to rate at 27.5 percent and Alpine County’s unemployment rate was 18.6 percent, the second highest rate unemployment rate in the state.
