Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
CNBC released its annual ranking of the ‘States Best for Business. The survey used publicly available data identified 40 different measures of competitiveness. States received points based on their rankings in each metric. Then, these metrics were separated into the ten broad categories, with input from business groups including the National Association of Manufacturers. Then the categories were weighted based on how frequently each is cited in state economic development marketing materials. Virginia was ranked #1 and Alaska was ranked #50.
Here are the ten categories ranked in our study: Cost of Doing Business; Workforce; Quality of Life; Economy; Transportation; Technology & Innovation; Education; Business Friendliness; Access to Capital and Cost of Living.

California ranked 32 down from last year’s 25th ranking. California continues to be ranked low regarding the Cost of Doing Business and Cost of Living and one we should be absolutely ashamed of, is the low ranking for Business Friendliness. California fell in the categories in the Quality of Life and conomy but remained #1 in Technology and innovation and Access to Capital.
California and Texas were the only states that had two number 1 rankings by category
Iowa ranked #1 for Cost of Doing Business Georgia ranked #1 for Workforce New Hampshire ranked #1 for Qualify of Life Texas ranked #1 for Economy Texas ranked #1 for Transportation California ranked #1 for Technology and Innovation Massachusetts ranked #1 for Education Delaware ranked #1 for Business Friendliness, but ranked 42 overall California ranked #1 for Access to Capital Oklahoma ranked #1 for Cost of Living
