CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Closing Post Offices 08-06-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The economy might do what neither snow nor rain nor dark of night could - close post office branches. Confronted with an operated debt of $7 billion, this week the US Postal Service assembled a list of nearly 700 offices that may be closed or consolidated out of a total of 32,741 across the nation. The list of possible closures has been sent to an independent regulatory commission for review.
The issue at hand is that the USPS is paying retirement benefits of its retired workers but is not making sufficient money to offset the costs of these benefits. Additionally, demand for service has fallen due to competition from FedEx, UPS and others along with the use of e-mail and the Internet, thus revenues have fallen significantly. And an apparent double standard has been created as the federal government workers are not being asked to take a reduced level of benefits compared to union retirees from General Motors. So the options have been to consolidate distribution facilities and now close post office operations, then look at other options to procure savings such as less service and raise revenues.
Meanwhile, the following is a list culled from news media and website sources from across the state along with information from the United States Postal Service. It appears that cities like St. Louis, Chicago and New York will potentially loose the most facilities, however, it is California as a state that could loose the most in this first round to be reviewed with 83 branches listed.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
