CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Best States 4 Biz 09-30-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Forbes released their list for the Best States for Business. Surprisingly, the Golden State moved up two spots to #38.
The analysis examined 33 different points of data and then ranked them in six categories - business costs, labor, regulatory environment, economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life.
While California placed #50 for business costs, it ranked in the top ten for growth prospects. Strangely, the state ranked 39th for its regulatory environment, which typically reflects the higher costs of doing business. And sadly, the folks from Forbes did not give the state a high ranking in the category of quality of life. A state that has one of the highest number and acreage for national parks, let alone some of the most geographically beautiful areas in the nation, specifically the highest point and lowest points in the continental U.S.
However, adjacent neighbors did not receive much better scores as Nevada and Arizona also were in the 30’s., Nevada seeing a drop from its previous 19th ranking to 31st and Arizona dropping from 18th to 36.
Meanwhile, Virginia was ranked 1st, followed by Washington, Utah, Colorado and North Carolina. Rhode Island was last.
The Fobes ranking was similar to the CNBC ranking in August, see 08-03-09 Minute illustrating that California should not be 'Crapped On' as many media pundits do about its over-regulated and impossible business climate.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
