CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Natural Disasters 10-24-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Natural disasters have always been a part of the Californias landscape from earthquakes, fires to floods.
Given that the state is an active earthquake zone, special attention is given to preparation and response for natural disasters specifically to building codes, technology and training for first responders and a myriad of public and private sector partnerships leading to statewide and regional collaboration and cooperation making California a world model in disaster preparedness and response.
The quick and fast responses to the current fires in the southern part of the state specifically in San Diego City and County illustrate this trend. Another example was the damage caused by the Northridge earthquake in 1994. Damage from the earthquake stretched some 85 miles. This earthquake is identified as one of the worst natural disasters in our nations history, creating nearly $18 billion in damage. Yet the preparedness and response along with the resilience of Californians lead to expedited responses of rebuilding buildings, businesses and infrastructure within a matter of months if not weeks.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
