CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Wildfire Scam 11-06-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
An e-mail that claims to be from the IRS seeking donations for the California wildfires is a scam, agency officials said.
The phony e-mails are said to include text from a speech made by a California legislator regarding the wildfires. The e-mail includes a link to a phony IRS Web site that seeks donations and requests the person's financial information. The agency's legitimate Web address is .
In addition, the IRS said that individuals who click on the link to the Web site may be inadvertently downloading malicious software that could steal their passwords and account information stored on their computer.
The IRS doesn't send unsolicited e-mails asking for personal and financial information or seek charitable donations, a statement from the agency related.
