Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.

A new study by the Sacramento Regional Research Institute ‘The Economic Effects of
Increased Broadband Use in California’ identifies that an increase usage of broadband
could lead to significantly higher levels of employment and payroll in the state.

The study shows that with a 3.8 increase of use by the adult population, California could
see a net cumulative gain of 1.8 million jobs and $132 billion of payroll over a 10 year period. 

The study breaks down the impacts by region.  In Los Angeles, it illustrates growth could
add 456,000 jobs and $33 billion in payroll.  In San Diego it could mean 152,000 jobs and
$33 billion in payroll.  In the Silicon Valley it translates to 93,000 jobs and $7.9 billion in
payroll

The study also identified that the percentage of Californians using a broadband connection
has tripled since 2001 and the between 2002 and 2005, broadband use generated approximately
198,000 jobs and approximately $11.6 billion of payroll in California
