CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Cyber Monday 11-26-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Cyber Monday is a term representing the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend. The term was coined in 2005 to hype online retailing for the holidays. So while Black Friday is the official kickoff of the traditional holiday retail season, Cyber Monday is the term for when online retail really takes off for the holidays
The idea was born when a few people at the organization, were brainstorming about how to promote online shopping. The genesis of the concept goes back even further. On line retailers were looking for their own marketing hook to match Black Friday, hence Cyber Monday.
However, according to a 2006 survey for Mastercard, they determined that the highest online day was a week later. And even a survey by of its members found that it was two weeks later that most people shopped on line.
So now you have an official excuse to spend your first day back at the office blowing off work and surfing the Internet for bargains!
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
