CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Tangerine Production 12-04-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
One of the great reasons for living in the state is the access to all of the great fresh fruits and vegetables. This time of year is the harvesting of tangerines.
While Florida remains the top tangerine producer in the nation, California is becoming a stronger contender for the top slot in the domestic market as new acreage comes into production.
California currently accounts for 40 percent of the nations production this season. Growers have been planting new groves specifically for clementines and other mandarin varieties of tangerines.
The 2007-08 crop is forecasted to total 433,000 tons nationally, 28 percent higher than last season as identified by the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Californias crop is forecasted to be 61 percent larger than last season and 30 percent bigger than from 2005
