CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Looking to the Heavens 12-11-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation have given two California universities Caltech and UC Berkeley a $200 million donation to build the worlds largest telescope.
Caltech and University of California, Berkeley in concert with an association of universities from Canada are participating in the venture. The use of the telescope will be to locate and analyze light from the first star systems, study how the Milky Way and other galaxies were formed and evolved and examine planet formation around the stars.
The telescope is being designed by scientists from the two Californian universities and from the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy. Design is expected to be completed by 2009. Operation of the telescope is expected to begin by 2017. Sites in Chile, Mexico and Hawaii are being considered.
Gordon Moore is the co-founder of Intel and as reported earlier in Minute 08-03-07; the Moore Foundation provided a grant to start a nursing school at the UC Davis Medical Center.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
